A guide is not a list

Why MACALLÚ would rather recommend three places properly than thirty places indifferently.

There is no shortage of lists telling you where to eat, what to see and the ten things you absolutely must do before leaving somewhere.

We are not very interested in making another one.

If MACALLÚ recommends a place, I would rather tell you why I think it is worth going there, what is actually good about it and perhaps when to go, instead of giving you thirty names and leaving you to work out which three were worth your time.

That means some of the guides will stay short.

There may only be three cafés we are willing to recommend. There may be a shop everybody loves that never appears because we haven't been there ourselves yet. A place can be perfectly good and still not belong in the guide.

That is fine.

The point is not to prove that we know everything around Killarney. It is to make the things we do recommend genuinely useful.

Sometimes that means telling you to go somewhere very well known, but to go at a different time or look at something most people walk past. Sometimes it means an old church, a short walk, a small gallery or a cup of coffee in a place where nobody minds if you stay for an hour.

And sometimes the right thing to write is nothing at all until we have found somewhere worth adding.

A guide should make a place easier to notice.

It should not give you more things to get through.
